Back2Business rebuilding careers

A woman enters a new world full of opportunity.

Solving talent and diversity challenges

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) sectors are the backbone of modern innovation. Yet, worldwide, they face severe talent shortages and a lack of diversity. According to the World Economic Forum, women represent less than 30% of the global STEM workforce1—a gender gap that stifles creativity and competitiveness. In a rapidly evolving landscape, it is critical to retain and reintegrate skilled professionals who have stepped away from their careers.

CSEM’s Back2Business program tackles these issues head on by helping both women and men smoothly transition back into the workforce. Through a forward-thinking emphasis on inclusion, this initiative ensures that previously untapped talent meets the growing demands of industry.

Shaping the vision

Back2Business reflects CSEM’s commitment to dismantling barriers that limit representation in STEM. Véronique Leresche-Roy, Vice President of Human Resources at CSEM, describes the program as more than a professional development tool. It is, she explains, “a profound commitment to restoring balance and empowering individuals to reclaim their autonomy.” This vision extends beyond helping participants restart their careers—it contributes to a broader mission of innovation and inclusivity within Switzerland’s STEM sectors.

Comprehensive support

With funding from the Canton of Neuchatel and the Economy department (Service de l'économie) in this same canton, Back2Business provides participants with tailored support to successfully re-enter the job market. Central to the program are personalized coaching sessions that rebuild confidence and equip participants for a demanding professional environment. Training focuses on emerging technologies, providing hands-on experience relevant to current industry challenges. These real-world projects hone skill sets while offering insights into how innovation evolves in STEM.

Promoting gender parity and inclusivity

The program prioritizes gender parity, aligning with Switzerland’s wider objectives to address leadership and skill disparities. By offering equal access to opportunities, CSEM is actively shaping a STEM workforce that reflects the country’s diverse talent pool.

Building sustainable solutions

Back2Business is designed with sustainability in mind, aiming to foster long-term impact on participants and the industries they serve. Plans to establish an alumni network will ensure ongoing mentorship and professional development, creating a supportive community of STEM professionals. The program’s partnerships with industrial organizations will further ensure that participants find jobs aligned with current market needs, positioning them for long-term success.

Shaping the future of work

By giving returning professionals the tools and confidence to progress, CSEM’s Back2Business program breaks down systemic barriers and helps build a more diverse and innovative talent pipeline. As Véronique Leresche-Roy notes, “Each successful journey reminds us of the profound impact inclusion has on building a stronger, fairer, and more caring world.” Through efforts like Back2Business, careers are reinvigorated, and the global STEM sphere moves closer to genuine equity and innovation.
