40 years of innovation
In 2024 we commemorated CSEM's 40th anniversary, reflecting on a journey of groundbreaking innovation and unwavering commitment. This milestone was more than a celebration; it was a testament to four decades of bridging cutting-edge research and practical industry applications—a vision that continues to inspire us.
From its inception, CSEM has evolved into a cornerstone of Swiss innovation, fueled by adaptability, foresight, and the courage to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change, digital transformation, and technological advancement. These achievements are not ours alone, but are a collective triumph of our talented teams, clients and partners, stakeholders, and the Swiss Confederation.
What sustains an organization through four decades of constant change? For CSEM, the answer is a steadfast sense of purpose, a commitment to shaping a better future and an unwavering willingness to support Swiss industry. Over the years, we have anticipated societal and industrial needs, developing technologies that improve lives and strengthen Switzerland’s global standing. For example, the development of wearable optical health-monitoring sensors exemplifies our ability to transform bold ideas into life-changing innovations.
However, we must not only celebrate achievements but prepare for the challenges ahead. Switzerland faces stiff competition from global innovation leaders such as the USA and China. Moreover, small and medium enterprises —the backbone of our economy—struggle with mounting pressures, which keep them from innovating. We must strengthen support mechanisms to safeguard the entrepreneurial spirit that defines Switzerland.
At the same time, CSEM continues to grow, recording a 7.2% increase in total revenues, a 23% rise in competitive research funds and over CHF 115 million in revenues. In 2024, we welcomed Sara Girardi as Chief Financial Officer, reinforcing our financial leadership and commitment to sustainable growth. Our dedication to equality and inclusion remains at the core of our success, generating diverse perspectives which in turn ensure that innovation thrives.
Looking ahead, our strategy will continue to focus on supporting Swiss industry, launching impactful initiatives and nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators. For example, through our ACCELERATE start-up program, we are committed to providing these future leaders with the tools and opportunities to turn bold ideas into valuable jobs.
Our legacy is one of building bridges—between disciplines, industries, and aspirations. The same determination that has brought us here can only strengthen us for the future. As we look to the next 40 years, we reaffirm our commitment to creating technologies that shape a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
