This master is to help our group in bringing knowledge in the field of synthetic data generation. Specifically, in this work the aim is to use 3D rendering software such as Blender, Unity or Unreal Engine. This will lead to increase the size and variety of data used in multiple projects, in order to improve the accuracy and generalization of our current machine learning algorithms. In particular, the student will be involved in an Industry 4.0 project, where the objective is to perform optical character recognition on complex industrial steel elements. Further participation to the development of the algorithms is also anticipated.
The work will consist of three threads. Firstly, an investigation of the best 3D render engine to automate data generation. Secondly the generation and evaluation of the data. Finally, the development of an algorithm to combine the synthetic with the real data.
To identify state-of-the-art 3D rendering engine/software and select the most adapted to the task. Develop a complete pipeline for synthetic data generation: automatization of the 3D mesh, parametrization of the lighting and camera, rendering, combination of the synthetic data with the real one by using machine learning approach. The candidate is expected to present their results at the end of the project, which will last a minimum of 6 months.
You have a background in computer graphic or a similar domain. Experience in computer vision is a plus. You are skilled in 3D rendering software. You are a good team player ready to tackle technical challenges.
